It could be a whilebefore there’s a female president of the United States. It's obvious stuff that thegame of politicshas far fewer female contestants than males, right? Well, a new study conducted by professors from the American University School of Public Affairs and Loyola MarymountUniversities sought out to find out why. They surveyed nearly 4,000 lawyers,business leaders, educators, and political activists, all of whom are qualified to run foroffice, to determine why women lack political ambition. Women view politics as extremely competitive and biasedagainst their own sex. That thinking is likely accurate as the three biggest names in the game (Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and MicheleBachmann) have been consistent late-night comedy targets. Speaking of the former two, women were also discouraged to run because they believed Clinton and Palin only brought to light the gender bias even more. As forBachmann, she might be viewed as tough, confident and competitive, but the congresswomanis a rarity. Potential female candidates have less confidence, are less competitive andare more risk-averse. Lastly, there was a consensusthat women felt they were much less likely to be qualified to run for office. While there’s a slight increase in female participation,the huge gender gap indicates that men still rule politics.
