Let the games end.On the surface, this could look like anadmission of tablet defeat to Apple, but these are different times for Microsoft. Thedays of using Office as a club to smash the competition are over. More and more people areusing free, web-based Google Documents for sharing word processing and spreadsheets amongcoworkers, and Apple’s eating some of Microsoft’s lucrative Office pie withits Pages and Numbers apps, which have both desktop and iOS versions. If Microsoft ishoping to prevent a complete productivity coup, it has to be everywhere. Combining an iPadversion with its Office 365 makes sense.This won’t be Microsoft’sfirst foray into the iOS App Store,and reports are that the iPad Office app works much like its OneNote app. Expect the priceto be bargain-basement low, since Microsoft knows people aren’t going to pay $100for something they can get for free from Google.
