Levon Helm, the drummer and sometime-vocalist for the legendary band The Band, died today at the age of 71. Now, we're not a music site, so we're not here to tell you that you absolutely must love The Band. But we will tell you that, as men, you should have a working familiarity with them. You've certainly heard their biggest hit "The Weight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aNN9X2oQbA)" (on which Levon sings), and we highly recommend you take a minute to appreciate "Up On Cripple Creek" (also with Levon on vocals) and, sure, why not "Life Is A Carnival (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFKTYPuILjs)." This is timeless music about real life, for grown people who have seen some hard times and been overcome with joy. There's meat to this music. Levon was a big part of that sound. He was the original drummer-singer and the only American in an otherwise all-Canadian band. After The Band broke up in the early 1970s, Levon went on to record a ton of his own songs, write an autobiography and host regular jam sessions at his barn in upstate New York, which were dubbed Midnight Rambles. Those jam sessions turned into albums, one of which won him a Grammy. But the point here isn't about his awards. The point is that, yes, they ain't making them like they used to. And here's one who's no longer with us. So go ahead and raise a glass to Levon Helm tonight, and if you've never listened to his music before, tonight's the night to start.
