Is Breastfeeding In Public Illegal? Hi Doc,Is breastfeeding illegal? I read an article that a teacher got in trouble for doing it in her class. Seems kind of wrong to be against the law but at the same time not appropriate for public displaying.Thanks.Here in the U.S., it is the land of the free and home of the brave. Except in most areas of the country, where, if you’re brave enough to breastfeed freely, you might pay a price for it with dirty looks and even verbal critiques. It’s a natural, normative experience that shouldn’t require police intervention. To me, it’s the manifestation and expression of sexual discomfort our society has with anything perceived as sexual. The problem with that argument is that breastfeeding is not sexual. It’s parenting, nurturing -- a positive form of attachment between mother and child. This is quite different than something sexual, like a person sucking on a female’s breast in public for pleasure.The good news is laws are changing to protect women and the arrests are becoming more and more rare. Sadly, women have been arrested in the past for breastfeeding. Most credible child/infant professional organizations support breastfeeding as important and beneficial to the child and family bonding. Here is a list of National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) list of breastfeeding laws (http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/health/breastfeeding-state-laws.aspx) for each state.
