my father's family is from the south and when he would visit his grandfather he said they would gather the eggs from the chicken in the morning for breakfast and then have the chicken for dinner. He also told me that his grandmother still used her outhouse even after she got indoor plumbing because "you don't shit where you eat" It's kind of mind blowing to realize that this was where that phrase must have originally come from.
