Why Sleeping Pills Could Be Killing You

Sleeping pills are often the last resort for those suffering from insomnia, but a startling new study suggests that they’re not quite the bestsolution, since they can put you out for good.Scripps Clinic Viterbi FamilySleep Center out of California discovered that people with prescriptions to sleeping pillsare five times more likely to die an untimely death. Researchers examined 10,529 peoplewho had prescriptions for sleeping pills, as well as 23,600 who didn’t, but weresimilar in age, health and income, among other factors.In comparing the twogroups, the researchers discovered that individuals who consume as little as 18 pills ayear are 3.6 times more likely to die early compared with people not taking any pills atall. Meanwhile, those who upped the dosage from 18 to 132 per calendar year were nearlyfive times more likely to pass early.It’s worth noting that this studyis a bit rudimentary because connecting the sleeping pills to a higher death ratedoesn’t necessarily mean that’s the sole cause. But all signs do point in thatdirection -- especially since higher doses led to higher death rates and a comparableanalysis of a Statistics Canada database in 2010 showed a similar risk of death.
