JanieBryant is brilliant as the costume designer for the show, which aired its first newepisode in 17 months last Sunday on AMC. The fashion team seems to be taking acasual turn with the male cast. Things aren’t quite as strict as they once were.Characters like Don Draper, Pete Campbell and Roger Sterling are more relaxed due, nodoubt, to the fact that the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce Agency is finally hitting itsstride after a rough first year. Still, signature suits had great moments throughout thetwo-hour premiere, which isn’t a surprise to anyone.We sat down withBryant to talk about the things we can expect and her second capsule collection for BananaRepublic inspired by Mad Men (in stores now). James Sanders (JS): Where can men shop for looks scene in theseries? Janie Bryant (JB): I design many of theprincipal cast's suits with the specifications to the period and the details of eachcharacter. I also find a lot of the vintagesuits at the amazing rental costume houses in Los Angeles, like Western Costume,American Costume and Palace Costume. The new collection has clothing and accessories for menthat celebrate the glamour, great tailoring and panache of the 1960s era. Inspired by thecountry club scenes from the series, Simon Kneen and I designed some great menswearseparates, including polo shirts, argyle vests and a lightweight navy blazer. The beautyof the collection is that it is inspired by the show but the cuts and fabrications are forthe modern customer. JS: Who would you say you drawmost of your inspiration from for menswear? JB:I do a lot of research by seeing old films from the period. I love doing my research andget so inspired by looking at vintage magazines like Esquire, GQ,Time, Life and Holiday. I love looking at oldadvertisements, newspapers and old photos. The internet is always a good place to getinspired, too. If I have to say who, three men who always inspire me are CaryGrant, SteveMcQueen and TerenceStamp. JS: We often see a dressy cast, but how canreaders emulate the casual elements of style that we sometimes get tosee? JB: It's all about polo shirts,short-sleeved button-down shirts, cardigan sweaters, V-neck sweaters, sweater vests,flat-front narrow legged trousers (solids and plaids), loafers and don't forget yoursports coat! JS: What kind of men’s accessories fitbest with Mad Men style? JB: I love the men'saccessories for this period, and as a costume designer, the accessories tell so much abouteach of these characters on the show.
