Have you ever heard of resveratrol? Neither had we. It's the plant compound found in redwine, said to help prevent cancer and diabetes. Now itmay even prolong your life. New research from the National Institutes ofHealth and the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research has come out contradicting a2010 claim by the NationalInstitutes for Aging that resveratrol does not extend lifespan. Doubts hadcaused the pharmaceutical company Sirtris to stop its clinical trials of resveratrol lastyear in an effort to develop an anti-aging pill, but this natural compound found ingrapes, blueberries and red wine is now back on the map, due to a new study that appearedin the May issue of Cell Metabolism. The NIH and the Glenn Foundation discoveredsomething new that the NIA research did not: resveratrol's anti-aging effects only workswhen a specific gene is present, namely SIRT1. In other words, no SIRT1, no anti-agingeffects -- which means that resveratrol's influence on the gene is significant.
