computer technical issues....need help

i didn't see a category......but here's the deal....a couple days ago i got the "system fix" malware.....was able to shut it down without losing too much (at one point the file that allows the cd drive to spin was lost....uggghhhh)....from safemode (finally) was able to repair, update, and run both avg and malwarebytes......installed chrome (since firefox wasn't recovered).....however, i lost all other items from desktop (pictures and stuff).....AND it seems i no longer has desktop access to the system restore.....i accessed it thru the safemode help and support menu and tried to restore but it's not working.....it's saying "system restore incomplete" "unable to restore to a previous restore point".....

any suggestions?.......I do have XP OS disk but not tech savvy enough to redo it the proper way without crashing my memory......i haven't tried it yet....hoping there's an easier or better way to restore to oct/early november instead
