“It’s still possible to make a big, fabulous, glamorous escapist movie,”says the Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes,“but at the same time say something about the world that we’re livingin.” Better known for dramas such as American Beauty andRevolutionary Road, Mendes has opened up about his decision to take on the iconicfranchise in a new videoblog on the official Skyfall website. "My relationship with Bond began when I was about 9 or 10 years old. CasinoRoyale [made me feel] like it was a real man in a real situation again. It remindedme of how I felt when I watched the SeanConnery movies -- it wasn’t actually that difficult a decision.” The videoblog also gives fans a sneak peek at the Skyfall sets, as heshoots DanielCraig and Dame Judi Dench in airports, underground lairs and the same exotic neon-litShanghai set from the first official still -- as well as on the streets of London, a firstfor Englishman Mendes. “Ironically, I’ve never made anEnglish movie. I’ve made six movies, and this is the first time I’ve shot inthis country, so I feel that the American years were my apprenticeship for doing aBond!” Mendes also explained how he’s coped with thedemands of making a huge action movie. “I think that the way any director dealswith a big film is in tiny incremental steps.
