Milk does the body good, andaccording to a new study, it’s also good for thebrain. American and Australian researchers examined1,000 adults and found that those who regularly consumed dairy products like milk, cheeseand yogurt did better on mental ability tests than those who rarely or never eatdairy. The key seems to be that our brain is made of 60% fat and thebrain cells are insulated by myelin sheaths that are made of 75% fat (diseases like multiple sclerosis begin when these sheaths start to deteriorate). Our body can’treplenish those fats on its own, and so it relies on our diet tokeep the ones in the brain nourished. The studyneeds to be tightened up a bit, as the connection between dairy and brainpowerwasn’t perfectly conclusive. Even so, it’s an interesting discovery thatresearchers will now delve into deeper.
