We're not, by any means, condoning that you go out and drink well past your normal limit. But soon there may be a pill for doing just that -- without the side effects of stumbling down stairs and falling asleep in your own vomit.Researchers from Yale University are testing a drug that could stop alcohol from making you extremely drunk, no matter how much you drink. The researchers believe iomazenil, taken before drinking, might negate some of alcohol’s effects on the brain. The results of a pilot study, in which researchers tested subjects in a driving simulator, suggested that after drinking, those who took iomazenil before drinking braked more quickly and were less likely to stray into the wrong lane. The point, surprisingly enough, is not to develop a drug that simply allows people to drink more. Instead, the researchers hope that by stopping alcohol from getting to work on particular brain cells, iomazenil could help in developing a "stay sober" pill to wean heavy drinkers off alcohol by taking some of the pleasure out of drinking. So, yes, this potential miracle drug that could allow you to keep up with your bros is actually intended for treating serious alcoholism. Our suggestion? Keep drinking in moderation, know your limits and once you hit them, stop drinking. Continue Reading
