Many of us consider the organic vs. non-organic debate every time we hit the grocerystore, wondering if the quality is really worth the extra price. But research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine mighthelp us decide once and for all, as it suggests that non-organic produce has just as manynutrients and vitamins as organic produce.A previous survey showed thatpeople’s motivation for going organic has to do with believing it’s healthierand more nutritious. Apparently, there’s a bit of a disconnect between ourperception of organic food and the reality. But while the study found that organic foodmay not be more healthy, it did find that it still has noticeably fewer pesticides (7%)than traditional produce (38%). The road more traveled includes crowdedslaughterhouses where the animals are pumped with hormones, fed genetically modified cornand butchered in stressful environments. The road less traveled includes free-range livingand more reasonable butchering methods. This study didn’t take thosefactors into account, and we’d be naïve to think that cooped-up chickens andfarmed salmon are just as good for us as animals raised the natural way.Ifnutrients are your main concern, then now you know that non-organic foods are just as goodfor you. But if you’re worried about hormones, treatment and antibiotics, thenorganic is still worth the extra cost. Continue Reading
