It really gives nobody a chance. You have to join up or your fucked. Then when you join up %99 of the time your gonna get caught doing their dirty work and just get time added on. Many go in for a year and come out 20yrs later if not ever. If I ever had to do time and it was short i'd claim mental insanity and just do all my time in the hole.

The Hole would make me go insane. Ive been in a holding cell for 3 days before and I got in 3 fights in one day and they were escorting me to the Hole for my own safety. I said NO WAY!!!! I couldnt be in Solitary. I took my chances annd the guard that put me in another tank said" Youve been in 3 fights in one day and one more you'll be doing Felony time!" He said that so nobody would fuck with this white boy. I was 5'9" about 220 yrs ago when it happened and in shape so the guard said they would test me. They did and one guy got a nice sucker punch when I was dozing off BUT he got a Luziana ass whoopin. I should have been charged with a Felony assault for drawing blood but video showed i was asleep when attacked. The guards fucked him up good when they dragged the dark fella out bleeding beautifully IMO.
Im no bad arse. Im laid back but jail and I hear Prison will bring out your instincts to survive and it sure did for me.
That was a trip!

Obviously it depends how many people are incarcerated, what they're incarcerated for, and what part of the country they're in. It varies greatly from state to state.
Lets just say I've had some associated do county jail time in multiple counties, and then prison in minimal to med. security prisons over the years.
COUNTY JAIL sucks ass!!
You're treated like shit and everyone looks down at you. Especially from the guards.
You get 1 change of clothes for a week and can only shower EOD if that. Not to mention some of them lock half your "pod" down in their cells for half the day while the other half is out and about in the main room. You know, to watch TV, listen to the radio, use the phone, play cards, or whatever.
Then half way thru the day (or every other day) it rotates. YOUR half the "pod" gets locked down while the other half is out and about enjoying some leg stretching time.
Plus in county jails the food sucks, and they only give you 1000cal per day (if that!). Its enough to keep you alive, but not much for anything else. 90% of the guys in jail will lose a couple pounds a week on that diet. I think thats why they do it, so if there's a problem when the cops have to rush in you'll be less likely to fight back if you're all sucked up.
Also they love to cram 4 guys in a 5' x 10" cell that was only designed for 2 guys (with 2 bunk beds). The other 2 guys are side by side on the floor, yeah its wonderful let me tell ya. Stuck in a room with 3 guys you dont even know, pretty much knowing them more intimately than you'd ever want to. You get to hear everyone's sob story, listen to details about their case, realize that somebody needs a breath mint in a bad way, who burps, who farts, who's not wearing deodorant, who's whacking off in the middle of the night (yeah THAT was fun LMTY, u sick FUCKS!) having your head 2' from the can while another dude is taking the worst dump of his life, the list goes on and on....
Very unhealthy, unsanitary, sickening, disgusting, and overall a big pain in the ass! Let's not forget half the time the phones dont work so you can't even call out.

Who accepts your collect calls? Who puts $5 on your books so you can buy real food? Who comes to see you during visitation? Who writes you a letter just to say "hello, hope things are going ok in there.." ?? Huh? WHO!?!? EXACTLY!! Not a damn one of them bastardsOh wait, out of my big group of friends I think I had 2 guys write occasionally, and 1 family member. That was about it.

Minimum security prison is sweet! ** no joke! **
First off its hell of a lot cleaner, floors are mopped, bathrooms are clean, garbages are dumped, you get 70+ channels of cable TV 24hrs per day in your cell, can use the phone whenever you want, get 3 hot meals (over 3000 calories) per day, can be out of your cell 12+ hrs per day, there's green grass everywhere outside, a library to check out books, law library to look up facts about your case, college classes, woodshop, license plate making, basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, pool tables, weight room, a medical facility with real nurses and doctors, dentists, you name it they got it.
Oh yeah, lets not forget the bathrooms are semi-private too! Walls and locking doors between the toilets and walls about chest high around each shower stall. No more needing that soap on a rope! lol
I know I missed a bunch of stuff but you get the idea. It's like a Country Club with a chain link fence around it. If you didn't see the fence in the distance, you wouldn't know you were locked up. They're THAT nice, at least the one my friend was at.
So If you ever have a run in with the law and have to choose between 6 mos county time or 1yr prison time, take the prison time! Its so much easier, less stressful, you get to keep your sanity, and most of them let you out 30% early with good time.

federal rules
cali has some of the worst state prisons, but federal is the way to go, most juice guys get federal
