Those who consider the president a strong leader also dipped. Just 51 percent consider Obama a strong leader, compared with 60 percent in June and 65 percent in May just after the death of Osama bin Laden, according to the Aug. 18-22 poll of 1,000 adults.
More people also see the economy as poor: 86 percent this month compared with 80 percent in June. Three-fourths believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, up from 63 percent in June. For the first time in the AP-GfK poll, a majority of all adults, 52 percent, said they disapprove of Obama’s overall performance.
